Some Sculpture: New Work by Zachary SALOMAN Pritchard
Opening Thursday July 11, 6-9 pm | INVITE
On View July 8-14 Gallery Hours: Fridays 5:30-7:30PM, during all Sugar City events and by appointment.
Artist Statement: I am often asked what my work is, or what it is about. My work is and is about many things, but not one thing in particular. My sculptures are formed from thoughts of shared personal experiences and expressed through abstracted anthropomorphic gestures. I think of this part as the head, that part as the torso, or these parts as arms. I do this with not much definitive characterization, conceptual aim or deep planned thought beyond a strong personal feeling of what it should be. I work to have the viewer walk away with a shared emotion from my work, be it comical, disgusted, soothed, or generally just moved. I utilize cast metals and traditional hand worked sculptural methods as these are processes I know, though am always expanding upon. I bend and play with them to bring about metaphors of time, creation, purpose, and meaning. I often use bright pastels, gritty textures, raw material colors and human like shapes to bring about these familiar forms. The sculptures remind one of this thing, or that thing, but it is not either of them. It is its own thing.
Zachary SALOMAN Pritchard was born in 1989 in Walnut Creek County, California. He completed a BFA in Sculpture from Buffalo State College in 2011. There he received numerous grants, awards, and scholarships and studied abroad in 2010 making work in Finland and Latvia. Most notably participating in a land art symposium at Pedvale Open Air Museum in Latvia during their Stone.Color season. Saloman completed an MFA program at University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA in 2014 with a Merit Scholarship and Provost Award. He has shown at alternative exhibition spaces up and down the eastern coast of the United States. He works primarily in sculptural media, but also creates drawings, prints, and paintings.
