At times it may be difficult to know what it means to be a safe space, but with this Code of Conduct we hope it brings clarity to this question. Sugar City Code of Conduct
In the interest of fostering an open and welcoming environment for all artists, musicians, attendees and volunteers, we as organizers pledge to making participation in our venue and our community a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of age, body size, disability, ethnicity, gender identity and expression, nationality, personal appearance, race, religion, sexual identity and orientation, or sexual proclivities between consenting adults.
Examples of behavior that contributes to creating a positive environment include:
-Using welcoming and inclusive language
-Being respectful of differing viewpoints and experiences
-Gracefully accepting constructive criticism
-Focusing on what is best for the community
-Showing empathy towards other community members
Examples of unacceptable behavior by participants include:
-Unwelcome sexual attention or advances
-Threats, hate speech, trolling, insulting/derogatory comments, and personal attacks
-Public or private harassment
-Bringing drugs or alcohol into the space
-Other conduct which could reasonably make other attendees feel unsafe
Sugar City organizers (aka Sugar Citizens) are responsible for clarifying the standards of acceptable behavior and are expected to take appropriate and fair corrective action, to the best of their abilities, in response to any instances of unacceptable behavior.
Sugar Citizens have the right and responsibility to ban temporarily or permanently any visitor to the venue for behaviors that don’t meet our community standards or are otherwise deemed inappropriate, threatening, offensive, or harmful. Volunteers have the right to contact a Sugar Citizen to handle any problematic situation that may occur while they are volunteering.
This Code of Conduct applies to all events and meetings held at the Sugar City venue, as well as all events held or sponsored by Sugar City at other locations. Additionally, Sugar Citizens reserve the right to take into consideration behavior that goes against our standards that occurs elsewhere, such as other trusted venues or on social media, when deciding if a temporary or permanent ban is necessary to keep our venue and attendees safe.
Instances of abusive, harassing, or otherwise unacceptable behavior may be reported by contacting the Sugar Citizen team at firstname.lastname@example.org. (Use “CODE OF CONDUCT REPORT” as part of the subject line.) All complaints will be reviewed and investigated and will result in a response that is deemed necessary and appropriate to the circumstances. The team is obligated to maintain confidentiality with regard to the reporter of an incident. Further details of specific enforcement policies may be posted separately.
Sugar Citizens who do not follow or enforce the Code of Conduct in good faith may face temporary or permanent repercussions as determined by other members of the venue’s leadership.

It has come to our attention that you’ve been feeling an ache in your toes, a want so great you don’t know what to do, you’ve been wishing and hoping and thinking and praying that we’d come back. Bold soul brothers and sweet soul sisters, Sugar City’s SOUL NIGHT is back! The party starts at 10 pm when DJ Handsome Dan and special guest DJs Reazon, Haüsfly, & Alexander L get you on your good foot and play the good tunes all night long. This is also close to the anniversary of Sugar Citizen Aimee Buyea’s bike accident 6 years ago so admission is FREE if you ride on down wearing a bike helmet. We are all about having s good time but remember SAFETY FIRST.
Sugar City is in year 3 at our second location at 1239 Niagara St Buffalo, NY. We hit the ground running when we were issued permits in March 2015 and we are still trying to stabilize our operation. Your donation will help us to keep on keeping on offering Buffalo a legal all-ages community art space.
