Brainstorm-Portland, OR
Jesse Malmed- Portland, OR
Lac Le Belle- Detroit, MI
Not The Wind Not The Flag-Toronto, ONT

BRAINSTORM’s ecstatic and eclectic two-piece is like an eight-dollar smoothie made of Deerhoof, Sam Cooke, The USAisaMonster, and a little African highlife. They have been winning hearts and blowing minds with genre-bending gospel prog. Packing venues all over Portland, the band recently headlined at PDX POP NOW, has shared bills with Japanther and the Boredoms and, according to the Portland Mercury, “manages to sound like the entirety of Portland’s music scene whirled up in a blender, in a very good way.” (http://www.myspace.com/brainstormbrainstorm)

JESSE MALMED’s series of video-based song poems, lush videos, and Conversational Karaoke (a participatory installation in which the “audience” enacts complex, charming and strange dialogues of the artist’s design) are future-thinking, yet squarely set in the realms of historical experimental film, conceptual poetics, and ecstatic improvisation. (http://www.jessemalmed.net/)

LAC LE BELLE is an intriguing acoustic trio that juxtaposes the early decades of recorded rural American music with decaying Rustbelt aesthetic. A tradition is re-imagined- or maybe just resumed- in the ‘future-rustic’ swirl of mandolin, banjo, resonator guitar and double-bass. The instrumentation echos another era, but is employed for a folk music of now. Lac La Belle began with its members learning a repertoire of old-time country and folk songs, but they soon added more and more original material. The songs were honed during two sizable tours in 2009 and this creative flurry culminated in the first eponymous recording, released in November of that year. Recorded by Jim Diamond (The White Stripes, Detroit Cobras, The Dirt Bombs etc), the entire record was cut live in the studio, using only a few microphones. Its spare production captures the timeless quality of Lac La Belle’s sound.

NOT THE WIND NOT THE FLAG is a duo consisting of Colin Fisher (guitar, bouzouki, ney, tenor sax, guzheng, hulusi, misc percussion) and Brandon Valdivia (Trap set, Mbira, Slit Drum, Percussion). Music is a way of accessing the divine. Vibration is the echo of our creation. For Colin and Brandon the experience of music is a transformative tool. A conduit for gnosis and discovering the true self. On any occasion their music could echo the traditions of Balinese music, West African music, Persian or Turkish music or it could be devastatingly loud Post-Hardcore, Noise, Free jazz eruptions. Or all of the aforementioned at once! The music refrains from being derivative but comes from a place of deep respect for the music that has lifted and guided their spirits. Sunday Soup Review Closing Reception
Friday October 1st
Gallery Open 6-10PM
Presentations and Performances 7-9:30PM

Sunday Soup is a community driven and instantaneous micro-funding structure to provide money to small scale projects. Sugar City is proud to be the local host of this national movement. This will be the last chance viewing of our review. Past winners will present their ideas and there will be soup!

Liz Flyntz and Anna Schime are the most recent Soup Grant winners. They received funding to finish production of their Art Journal Erotic Economies. They will present some films from the DVD that accompanies the journal.

Jordan Dalton received funding for his Ecological Disaster Tour. In March Jordan led a field trip digging the buried secrets of Western New York’s heritage of environmental disaster and injustice. Starting with Love Canal, we spent the day traveling around the region, visiting radioactive and toxic waste burial grounds, ecologically and socio-economically abusive industries, and other sites of devastation. We were joined by eyewitnesses and activists, who provided more information about both the tragic history and hopeful future of the region.

Damian Weber received fundingfor his video remix series The Moomins (Voice-Over). The Moomins are the central characters in a series of books and a comic strip by Swedish-Finn illustrator and writer Tove Jansson. Damian has constructed a beautiful array of songs that are interwoven with the surreal footage of the original Claymation tv series.

Aimee Buyea will present on the international scope of the Soup Movement and its founders in Chicago, InCubate.

HOW IT WORKS: Sugar City shares delicious soup (vegan and vegetarian!) and other yummy accompaniments. You generously donate $5 to the future winning artists. Then, while we eat and relax artists will present their projects. Sunday Soup goers will select one artist to receive the donations collected that night.

Soup grants provide funding for small projects and a free show/ing at Sugar City. Projects can be anything such as fine art, media art, cooking, sewing, producing an album, whatever you can imagine using your creativity and imagination and would not be funded by traditional sources. The grants are completely unrestricted and will be awarded at the discretion of the attendees at Sunday Soup.. Sunday Soup is sweeping the country.

We have sister soups in Brooklyn, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Chicago, Detroit, Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids, Portland, New Castle, Kiev and MORE! Buffalo’s Sunday Soup has raised over $1300 so far!

Extreme Animals
UVB-76 (Sherri and Mario’s new musical collaboration)
Films by Sophie Hamacher

music is a question with no answer
Jacob Ciocci and David Wightman (Extreme Animals, Paper Rad, You Can’t Do That on Television) present a mash-up of live music, video, staged theatrics, and global meltdowns. They choreograph a disjunctive array of live shredding, extreme feedback, youtube bombardment, ecstatic dance moves, and sunday morning cartoons. Their newest performance delves into the world of tween culture and the current obsession with the infinite hall of mirrors known as “forever young”. Performers sell their soul Paganini-style to become vampires cursed to bleed all over their instruments for all time.
Jacob Ciocci is an artist and current eyebeam fellow notably regarded as one third of the American art collective Paper Rad; prolific producer of music, installations, websites, and animations. David Wightman is completing a PHD in music composition at UCSD where he is a lecturer of pop music studies. Some of his many music projects include Fortress of Amplitude, Powdered Wigs, and Chariots of Fire. Together Jacob and David form like Voltron in the high-NRG electronic music band Extreme Animals and have toured the country every summer for the past 8 years presenting their music, videos, and art.

Sophie Hamacher, an artist and filmmaker from Berlin, Germany, works primarily with collage, reconfiguring media images by using documents and reclaiming them from their mere informative quality. She has written extensively on the relationship between art and document, and the unconscious or conscious witnessing of historical events through photography and film.

For one night only, Sugar City will be hosting our very own 2nd annual ZAIREEKA LISTENING PARTY! Last year’s was such a blast, we’ve decided to do it again and go bigger, better and weirder than ever.

For those who don’t know, ZAIREEKA is a legendary 1997 album by The Flaming Lips which consists of 4 separate CDs meant to be played simultaneously. The result is unlike anything else ever …recorded. The only way to hear it is to gather together a bunch of friends and sound systems and make an event out of it. Due to differences in sound sources, the room it’s played in, and timing (CD players don’t play perfectly in sync with each other), ZAIREEKA is a totally unique event every time it’s played, and can only be experienced in person. The compositions are some of the strangest and most experimental the Lips have ever recorded: drum solos that swirl 360 degrees around you, orchestras that crescendo in a druggy cacophony, swarms of insects and jet engines come at you from six different directions until they merge into an explosive guitar solo. It’s an overwhelming cloud of sound that fills the room and surrounds you from all sides. Be ready for some of the strangest and most unique music you’ve ever heard. Fans of their return to weirdness with their most recent album EMBRYONIC will especially enjoy it.

We’ve got some extra surprises to make this year’s event even more fun, too. First of all, we’ll be raffling off a basket of Lips-related goodies that will include Mark Richardson’s book about the album from the “33 1/3” series, as well as some rare Lips vinyl! (Also, as always, costumes are encouraged, and we’ll be giving out prizes for those, too.)

But most exciting, we’ll be featuring ZAIREEKA’s elusive 5th disc, which is a rare disc of new music the Flaming Lips recorded for ZARIEEKA’s 10th anniversary in 2007 and distributed in an extremely limited edition for Record Store Day. We’ve got a copy and will be playing it at Sugar City for this event, so even if you’ve heard Zaireeka before, you’ve never heard it like this. Not just 4, but 5 fabulously freaky CDs playing through 10 speakers in mindbending decaphonic sound!

So put on a costume, grab some friends, flashlights, and boomboxes and
come enjoy some of the most unique rock music ever recorded in a space filled with Christmas lights, balloons, and psychedelic videos. It’ll be the closest thing to a Flaming Lips live show as you can get without Wayne Coyne rolling around in a giant space bubble. All for the low price of FREE!
